day after indy day
technically. it's 1:36 a.m.
yet another new track tonight.
short one.
like a buck-fifty long or something.
ends in poor taste.
still, just posting idearrs.
lots of work to do.
tis called "you've been, where?"
very tentative lyrics:
in the corner of the world
somewhere i've yet to be
she is drinking wine with her friends
but late at night she thinks of me
rising every morning
wondering if today will be the day
when our lives meet
she can hear the words from off my lips
i say...
where've you been
and why you taking so long?
it's not that i'm weak
but it's so hard to be strong
when you're waiting on an angel
but heard heaven was gone
prove them wrong
i need your advice about as much as someone needs their shoes
this was a track alex named 'july dos' on the 'base for the simple fact that he thought up the piano part on the second.
more later. i suppose i should sleep. or watch 7 Pounds. i purchased it out of one of those red box thingy's at walmart. yes, walmart.

mom, i forgot your birthday (again)

a re-recording of a song i'd made a few months ago. it'll be tweaked once or twice more before it's all said and done. i've also got what i believe to be a pretty cool idea for an opening/close to the song, but i'll need a little help from my friends. stay tuned.
pretty self-explanatory lyrically...i'm a horrible son.

'waiting' & 'seven months'
so we've got two new tracks up on the space page. they both need work (as do the others). i literally wrote seven months of days in the past 24 hours using a riff I'd shown Sluijs around March and had yet to use. there are several ideas for inserting clips that i think would make that track a lot more interesting. also, a lot of my piano is off rhythm. still, this is just to put the idea out there. our motto since we started this around Christmas hasn't changed: "it's all about the idea." lyrically most of the song is about what i call my time in exile in georgia, which eventually transitions to the current situation back to the cornfields of defiance.
seven months of days:
in the grey space between two lives
is a mother with plenty of advice
they ignored her once
but she knocked twice
let her in
could you relay this hand-me-down message of mine
to its' rightful owner?
i'm thinking it's time
you'll find a number in the stall of an Augusta Bi-Lo
...Daniel's Parkway
seven months of days
and seven months of nights
and all those things that i told ya
well, those were white lies
they reflected so easily
off your pretty brown eyes
who ya love, girl?
holding off
on the world for awhile since it don't seem you'll leave my mind
sitting in
writing songs on sun-filled summer days instead of going out
after hours
smells of bonfires and teenagers swimming in above-ground pools
close my eyes
standing beside the Auglaize and wondering if I'll miss it
the other is a track Sluijs just created earlier in the week, i believe - while i was waiting. it's early, but i think it would be a great choice to kick off our record. that day is still a ways away however, so we've got plenty of time to decide. it's a short track, but there's a good vibe to it.
while i was waiting:
through the eyes of a stepchild
a woman shouts, "the sex is wild"
on thecorner of 10th and Mild
scaring kiddies like X-Files
now leave your familybehind awhile
at the deli by three-mile
there must be something about her smile
you stare at her through
the reflection on the tile

an ode to darner
we've dropped yet another nugget of joy (hopefully joy...and not pain) for yins to devour (or neglect, whichever).
first, i'll start by stating, that you won't need to turn your monitor, headphones...whatever it is you use...up, at all throughout the listening experience. sang this buster in one take and without writing (the lyrics don't make much sense at all, you'll find)...you'll have that with drafts i suppose...but back to the original point - for whatever reason, i was singing obnoxiously loud on this one.
this is a relatively new piano track for Sluijs and obviously very bare. no strings (we get string-happy often), no guitar...nothing. that will certainly change later. as will the lyrics.
for the time being, i tell you that the motivation for the title was taken (stolen?) from a poem my cousin wrote entitled "i have a thinking problem.'' i believe her to be an amazing writer. this isn't the first time i've stolen from her. i made an extremely strange track a couple years ago called the lady in the radiator in which a distorted version of my own voice (with backing hummings and nonsense) read yet another one of her poems.
things are slowly beginning to come together on the little time front. piece by piece. peace by peace. there might be another nugget unveiled in the coming days.

midi mania
We're posting drafts of some new trax we've been working on over the past couple of days. These have literally came out of nowhere. I think the new midi's ignited our creativity quite a bit. We were in what some might refer to as a 'lull' for awhile there.
In other news, I can't log tonight's run because Running2Win's being updated. Whatthehell, bro? (in the voice of Jack Black's character from Anchorman)

what's nu?
as far as material's concerned, we're where we were probably a month ago, which one might think would be disheartening, but there are no worries on our front. the summer is upon us and we're both motivated to get back to work. i think we're ready to shut up and complete this album.
we have quite the laundry list of short and long term goals for this little project, but for now we'll keep those to ourselves and have fun with it. hopefully by the end of the summer our finished product (an album) will be posted to our myspace.
one closing note: alex came up with yet another incredible melody over the weekend. he showed me tonight up in the piano dens of schauffler and i was beyond impressed. i think this track has the potential to be our album opener.
related - tonight i finished the lyrics for palmetto. we're revamping the song after we complete 'skipping rocks.'
good times.

sope on a roap
thanks, kudos and appreciation must be sent via phonelines to paul van der sluijs for spending countless hours clearing the harddrive of the 'studio' (and for consuming tom's obscure brew inside the chapel). it looks as if this thing might happen afterall.
a true recording of "sweet honey"--or whatever we decide to call it--has become our primary focus. we hope to spend sunday creating something that can kick the record we posted to the intranet last week to the curb (hopefully a finished version - le one we put on the 'album').
until then i felt the need to share a trailer.
now, nothing can contest my most anticipated movie...maybe ever...tim burton's version of 'alison in wonderland,' which is coming out sometime next year...but this guy has me pretty excited. anyone my age who grew up reading the series (everyone?) should be able to appreciate the significance of what you're about to see. not to mention, one of the best band's of all time - the arcade fire - have provided the backing tuneage to the thing.
i don't care if it's a children's story, guess who's gonna be throwin' bows in the direction of little kids to get in to see this wonder of a film?
me.

close(r)
Slice's 'cuz' is coming tomorrow and freeing us some space on the 'studio' so we can set up the interface soon. This means polished songs will be coming soonish. None of this jibberish that was posted last week.
Practiced a bit last night for an audience of one (mr. tom heil) and are close to putting the finishing touches on the tentatively titled song "sweet honey." Lyrics are nearly a go and we've decided to switch the delivery a bit.
Once the interface is in and we're a bit more versed on how to use the 'base things should start to take off. That's where we are.
Oh, and the embedded above is D of E's new video for "NoOneDoesItLikeYou." D of E is Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear and his former NYU roomate...whom I revere like Paul.

sweet honey

above: a baldersnatch
you can listen to the first take of our newest song right hizzere.
this should give yins a bit of an idea of what's to come.
certainly amateur...but then...that's what we are.
should be a bit mo' crisp after the new mic & interface cover our blemishes.
again, the thing's essentially lyricless, aside from the chorus, which was mentioned in the previous post.
i must also add the fact that alex didn't want me to share this extremely rough version, but i've decided to be an ass and put it up anyway. there's no shame in mumbling jargin and butchered notes...so long as it's original mumbling jargin and butchered notes.
lest any man should boast.
good night all...it's nearly 4 a.m. in the midwest. i should have been sleeping a long time ago.

ford chapel
i'm not going to be able to sleep tonight. as richard ashcroft said in alone with everybody: "i'm on fire / and full of love and new desire."
a-slice and i met up for the second consecutive night in our new venue - ford chapel in schoffler hall. last night, with dr. ken wetstein's blessing, i packed up the "studio" and carried it from the offie to the chapel. it now sits right behind our piano. that's right, our piano. no more casio keyboard riffs.
which reminds me, we also upgraded the guitar. gone are the days of playing on alex's old strummer. kyle renick gave us his bro's hand-me-down, and it's a thing of beauty.
at any rate, why was tonight so special? well, we essentially played our first show. from 9 until around 11 alex and i were having what was arguably our best session ever, as he puts it: "vomitting" ideas and music...the way the creative process should be. we were especially excited about the development of a song we've tentatively called "sweet honey" (yes, we know, stupid). we already had the chorus in order, but we finally have chords and melody (no lyrics yet) for a verse.
the chorus now officially goes:
and i swear you
you've changed me
i've never been so free in love and happy
and i just want
to let you know...
that night i
met you while
talking at the bar all night
i knew then
that something in this world went right
anyway, after wrapping up a great session we decided to call the guys living in the ga house to come check things out. sure enough, awhile later, in comes j-brew, t-heil and m-sanko. we played a four or five song set for them (only the songs we feel comfortable enough to play) and then just hung out for awhile afterwards. we ended up ditching the chapel around midnight. it was such a great time and has my mind racing with ideas and possibilities in terms of what the future might hold.
alex just ordered us a real mic tonight and his cousin is apparently going to rearrange my desktop so that we can run our newly-purchased interface. when all of that happens we figure it will take a month max to make an album. we're planning to be able to put something in our friends and families hands here in about five-to-six weeks, and we're very excited about it. ken wetstein might even make a guest appearance on guitar...stay tuned.
we'll post rough drafts of new songs soon if i have any say. i'm really anxious for people to hear this stuff. we're proud of the majority of what we've been working on lately. admittedly, there is some serious junk as well, but we stand by the better stuff.
again, i can't emphasize enough how great it is to get out of the office. the chapel is the perfect venue - not only to practice, but to hold potential shows. hopefully we'll get the opportunity to host some get-together's there this summer.
...this just got interesting.

"weekenders"
first thang's first. the b.snatch currently has close to twenty-five original sung tongs under construction. slice and i have come to a conclusion: attempt to put a hault on new material and hone in on the stuff we already have. as alex stated in a previous post, thursday night (i believe) we got 'after it' as the kids say. we practiced some old stuff live and came up with a few new ideas we're happy about. not only that, earlier in the day we finally purchased cubase. we've decided to kick magix to the curb and move up to the minors ('base' certainly isn't the majors, but magix was straight-up grade school...it's time to get serious, we dropped mad money on 'the base' [all of two bills, haha]).
when 'the base' gets here we'll begin to decide which tracks deserve the right to make our first cd-r. as of now i think we'd agree that only a few have truly separated themselves from the pack:
little time (which i posted to the blog awhile ago in accoustic guitar form has now evolved to piano and believed to be one of our stronger tracks...we have a few plans/ideas in terms of which direction we need to go with it but ultimately like where it stands)
singe in a small town (one of only two deframe track's i've recorded since the move to defiance is a song slice enjoys killing over the piano as well...you'll probably see this make the cut when it's all said and done)
alicia (again, a song i posted in the first entry of this blog awhile back)
there are a few other rough tracks (with just as rough names) such as 'tiny dino,' 'all about the idea' and 'sweet honey lullabye' that will most likely end up making the cut, but no song is safe. we have much to work on, or..."much ado about something."
oh, and as for the title of the post...
i was in border town bryan, ohio this evening watching a play in montpelier called 'the lion in winter' with my friend Dawn when she noticed a paper calling for open mic talent at the nearby "little theatre" in bryan. the open mic nights started just recently and will apparently run all the way through the summer through a program called "weekender's." the program calls for poets, singers, jugglers, comics...whoever...from the community each and every saturday. what better place for an opening baldersnatch gig? i can think of none.
i was all about making it start this very saturday, the 21st, but apparently slice will be entertaining youth soccer athletes at a camp he'll be running. still, we soon hope to get our kinks out in front of DOZENS of listeners before attempting the local defiance coffee shops, etc.
i should be writing a paper right now.
much love.

balderdraft's
Last week (the week of Monday, Feb. 16th) Slice and I got together and worked on a few new ideas. These two beauts apparently survived the process. Everything's rough at the moment - structure, lyrics (see Little Time), even the flippin' titles. We've literally thrown these together fastlike as bookmarks. We've still got a lot more "reading" to do, if you will. Still, if you're one of the five persons who know we exist and are curious as to what we're up to, this should give you a bit of an idea.
